## The Genesis: From Celluloid to Wood, Glass, and Plaster
For over six decades following the 1942 premiere of Warner Bros.' iconic film *Casablanca*, travelers arriving in Morocco searched in vain for Rick's Café Américain. The famous gin joint had existed only on Hollywood sound stages at Burbank, California.

That changed in 2001 through the vision and determination of **Kathy Kriger** (1946–2018), an American commercial counselor stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Morocco. In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, Kathy chose to leave government service and establish a lasting monument demonstrating American optimism, cultural bridge-building, and enduring friendship with the Moroccan people.

## Rounding Up "The Usual Suspects"
To finance the ambitious restoration, Kathy famously sent letters to friends, colleagues, and supporters worldwide inviting them to "buy into mine." She formed an investment company aptly named **The Usual Suspects S.A.**, drawing investors from America, Morocco, and across the globe.

## The Historic Riad at Sour Jdid
Kathy selected a historic 1930s grand mansion built directly into the ramparts of Casablanca's Old Medina (Sour Jdid). The building had once served as a private residence and later as a diplomatic outpost.

Working closely with Moroccan master craftsmen (maâlems) and interior designer Bill Willis:
- Authentic architectural details were lovingly revived: sculpted plaster arches, cedar woodwork, brass fretwork lanterns, and geometric zellige tiling.
- Modern luxuries were integrated: four fireplaces, an intimate second-floor balcony overlooking the inner courtyard, and a private dining alcove with ocean port views.
- Rick's Café officially opened its doors on **March 1, 2004**, instantly becoming an international cultural landmark.

## The Legacy of Kathy Kriger (1946–2018)
Kathy authored the acclaimed memoir *Rick's Café: Bringing the Film Legend to Life in Casablanca*, detailing her two-year adventure of perseverance, architectural restoration, and Moroccan camaraderie. She operated Rick's Café with boundless warmth until her passing in 2018. Today, her devoted team continues her legacy, ensuring that the magic of 1942 lives on.
